Roman Era.

43. Roman invasion of England. Local king Prasutagus becomes vassal ruler.

60. Death of Prasutagus, kingdom annexed by Romans. His widow Boadicea leads Celtic rebellion, destroying Colchester, London and St Albans.

61. Boadicea defeated by Romans.

c100. Roman rule solidified by system of ports, roads and garrisons.

c200. Drop in sea level makes region increasingly attractive for farming. Growth of Roman villas.

c250. Imperial weakness leads to repeated rebellions by British Governors.

c300. Romans set up coastal defences to defend against seaborne raiders.

305. The future Emperor Constantine the Great strips Britain of troops for his bid for the throne.

360's. Saxons step up raids on coast, Roman resistance increasingly ineffective.

380's. Start of withdrawal of Roman forces.

410. Requests for help against the Saxons refused by Rome. The former province is on it's own.

Anglo-Saxon Era.

450's. Saxon raids turn to full-scale invasions.

550's. Region fully under Saxon control. Ruled as independent kingdom from the new town of Norwich.

620's. Spread of Christianity.

700's. Kingdom increasingly weakened by war. Foundation of Ipswich.

c800. Start of Viking raids, which soon turn to full-scale invasions.

850. Region fully under Viking control. Foundation of Lowestoft.

920. Saxon reconquest, absorbed into the new 'Kingdom of England'.
1004. Norwich sacked by Vikings.

Medieval Era.

1066. William I conquers England. Region offers no real resistance.

1075. Earl of East Anglia revolts against William I. Norwich [except castle] is burned to the ground.

c1100. Foundation of King's Lynn. Mass immigration makes region increasingly prosperous and wealthy.

c1200. Foundation of Great Yarmouth. Rise of the woollen industry. Norwich now second largest city in country. Building of current Norwich Castle and Cathedral.

1270's. Series of riots against the rule of the Bishop of Norwich.

1286. Jews expelled from country, destroying flourishing communities in region.

1302. Hanseatic Kontor established in Ipswich.

1340. Norwich boasts largest set of city fortifications in England after London.

1348. Black Death kills a third of the population, causing a severe depression in region which lasts for centuries.

1381. The Peasants' Revolt. Region falls to rebels, most towns sacked. The Bishop of Norwich, with a large army puts down revolt most harshly.

c1400. Wolves now extinct in region.

1412. Great Fire of Norwich claims nearly all the city.

Tudor & Stewart Era.
1505. Fire destroys half of Norwich.

1534. Henry VIII breaks with Rome, founds the Church of England. Region rapidly converts to Protestantism.

1549. Kett's Rebellion. Agricultural unrest turns into full-scale rebellion. After bitter fighting around Norwich [which once again takes severe damage], they are defeated.

1560's. Region regains prosperity, due to farming, woollens, fishing and European trade. Norwich once again second city of the country. Waves of Protestant immigrants arrive to region from Spanish Netherlands.

1570's. Region increasingly under the sway of Puritans.

1593. First printing press, Norwich.

1610s – 1640s. Wave of Puritan migration from region to New England, mainly Massachusetts.

1644 – 1648. English Civil War. Minority Royalist support quickly stamped out by Parliamentary forces. Country becomes a republic under Cromwell.

1660. Monarchy restored.

1665. 'Great Plague of London' ravages region.

1680's. Wave of Huguenot [French Protestants] settle in region, fleeing persecution.

1688. The 'Glorious Revolution' deposes the Catholic James II for the Protestants William and Mary.

1701. First regional newspaper in UK; Norwich Gazette.

1707. United Kingdom formed by union of England and Scotland.

Hanoverian Era.

1710's. Dutch engineers start draining region's fenland and improving agriculture, assisting in prosperity of region.

1720's. Norwich becomes increasingly turbulent. City becomes renowned for stormy meetings and the occasional violent riot motivated by often nonsensical issues.

1755. Racetrack in Newmarket opened.

1780's. Royal Navy dockyard built in Great Yarmouth. Height of prosperity of region.

1790's. Increased competition from cotton slowly destroys woollen industries.

1814. Colman's Mustard founded in Norwich.

1820. Start of industrial decline due to modern factories being constructed outside of region.

1824. Jarrold & Sons moves to Norwich.

1825. Port of King's Lynn becomes unusable to large ships.

1832. Great Reform Act. Voting rights given to middle classes, abolition of 'rotten boroughs'.

Victorian Era.

1840's. Chartist riots across nation.

1842. First cannery, Lowestoft.

1843. First steam engine, Vermuyden Fen.

1845. Railway magnate Peto attempts to build lines throughout region; scheme abandoned after faulty planning and company bankruptcy.

1846. Corn Laws repealed, causing grain prices to fall drastically, and with that landowner's income.

1851. First telegraph line, Yarmouth.

1860's. Use of iron over wood in large ships wrecks region's shipbuilding industry. Wave of cholera outbreaks occur.

1861. Last public execution in region.

1866. Norwich linked to London by railway.

1867. Second Reform Act. Upper working class now allowed to vote. Due to stagnant population, region loses half it's MPs'.

1870's. Start of tourism trade.

1871. Norwich began construction of modern sewers.

1885. Start of agricultural depression which his region hard.

1886. Caley's Chocolate founded in Norwich.

1891. Railway network in region completed.

1894. First telephone exchange, Norwich. First electrical power station, Yarmouth.

1899 - 1902. Boer War.

Edwardian Era.
1902. Founding of Norwich City FC.
1903. First electric tramway, Yarmouth. Opening of the Grand Opera House, Norwich.
